Some of you might find this interesting.... I've been doing a few tuning mods to my TDR for the last few years or so, porting, homemade pipes, head skimming etc. and it's come along quite nicely. But whilst using some pretty reliable computer programmes to come up with guidelines for the mods, the one area which always worked out way too small was the intake, from carb size to reed valve area.

So I got got of some carbon fibre reed material and made my own one piece reeds, allowing a big increase of reed port area from enlarging the port windows and greater lift, going from a stock 600mm' to 900mm'. This on its own did make a slight differance, but not as much as I'd liked, or rather expected.

The next target was the small carbs, the recomendation to fit my new reed area was 32mm. So I got hold of some 32mm RGV carbs (early model) from ebay (only £12!) and grafted them on. This needed some new cables making up, the manifolds slightly opening out, the carb mounting stubs filing down (aswell as the tops/floatbowl), new carb to airbox rubbers (made from an old inner tube..a real bugger this bit) and a couple of other things (so not really an easy job). There's something satisfying about grafting bits from other bikes on, and they did look much more purposeful.

So, first ride and they ran way too rich. So, one removed intake silencer and try again.....better. At least it would rev out now, but still too rich (This was due in part to muck in the main air jet I think)....after lots of jet swapping, I came up with with the answer...210 Mains, Main air jets drilled to 0.8mm, TDR pilots, needle lifted 0.35mm and intake silencer shortened to 30mm. Now it was crisp as a winters snowy morning. Because the bigger carbs have more area for a given throttle movement, it always feels more powerful, so 3/4 throttle feels like full throttle before. Then at full throttle now it has a little more, but still not as much improvement as I'd hoped, certainly cleaner over 9500 though.

So a pretty good improvement for only £12 and a several hours hard work. I'm quite chuffed with that! (yellow lumps in side of carb are golf tees acting as idle screws.....still waiting for the new ones to arrive)

Have you ever had your TDR on a rolling road,
Are you the bloke that has the pipes slung underneath the bike?

Yep...thats the bugger. Living down here in darkest Devon there aren't many dyno's to visit, maybe one in Plymouth, but I'd rather spend the money on bits or saving up for tyres (not much money to spend....) Judging by the way it pulls through the gears it's pretty healthy though. When Ickleboywonder eventually has the time for a go, maybe he'll have an honest opinion...?

Sorry again martin after all these horrible weekends this one will not happen cos grandma popped her clogs last weekend and im off to the funeral! SORRY
After speaking to martin i can seriously vouch for this guy he is extremley skilled and talented ! Just take a look at the pipes and tell me which bike he nicked them off????? yep he didnt home made! which i think is pretty impressive. Not to mention everything else he has done to the bike.
As for dyno time well to be honest we have got a dyno shop in the land of family love but its not cheap(qoute high = fools and dreamers dont clog you up) and they dont do open days !!! and seen as its pretty pointless just doing the one run you could be talking a £100 before its worth contemplating it.

Martin your more than welcome to come and crash out down here one night and we will hit the town just remember its true what they say about plymouth women !!!!!
Just a quickie looking at the pic don has i know it looks like a coolant overflow bottle but knowing you its not some nitrous / water injection thing your trying is it???????
