It looks like a Spondon frame is going to be an imposibility. They are either Silly money for a pile of tat or simply not available. So what do you guys reckon to stuffing my 110bhp RD500 motor into a ZXR400 chassis. I have an option of a complete bike minus engine for £700. I know they were about the best of the 400's race wise...but was that just motor..?
I've had a sit on one and they are spot on the right size, not too small surprisingly, and actually more roomy than a stock RD500.
So what do you reckon....make a good track bike or not...? I'd be doing it totally as a track bike 'not for road use'. I want something that is more suited to the track than my bastardised R6 fronted RD.

Rich Gareth, there was a Marlboro ZXR400 with 500LC lump in it on the Club stand at the BMF show a few years back. It was owned by the same guy who had the candy red 4 cyl 750LC. I've got some pics of it I can dig out later.

Superb Rich....its this bike I'm talking about...totally complete minus engine carbs and oil cooler. Looks Ok for £700 to me...its a 94L model. What do you think..?

Go for it I say.

If I had my time again I would probably looking for a complete bike as a donor for the engine, but only because I want a road bike.
Costin frame is perfect for a track bike, but putting the road bits on is going to be a bit of a bitch.

yeah I can go for it....but what do reckon it would be like...do you think its got potential....I reckon its better as a basis than an RGV for instance. Engine is about the same weight and will have a similar position..so shouldn't upset tyhe handling of the stock bike...I will be fitting a dogs bollock rear shock as I'm saving so much money. Yeah I reckon it will be pretty good....air pipes in tank will cool rear cylinders .... R6 front could always go in it anyway...its got the right size wheeels....could even afford some expensive lighter ones. Its a lovely frame....bit worried about lower pipes and lack of room/clearance. Probably have to loose the kickstart...I'm not digging into the frame to make it fit. ...Arrrrrrgh crap I just told him I want it... Laughing You only live once.. Cool

I would have thought that £700 for a bike minus motor was too dear.

There was a GSXR 400 for sale at Ashby Folville last night, T&T for £800.
Looked alright as well, not mint but hey, it was cheap

I thought that aswell...but it is taxed and Mot for a year.. hahaha

when you add up the bits its OK...

Complete front end.....? complete rear end....? Full body kit with tank and seats..? Frame with V5.. radiator....blah blah.

It does sound expensive..but ..GSXR400's are apparently rarer but not so good and less sought after..
True though, I could buy a runner ZXR for not much more money....I just dont want to, because I would never take the motor out, and even if I did I would never sell it ..just more crap lying about.

Hmm..as I thought....looks shite...however I'm hoping mine will look like the photo below. The problem is the motor will not fit without losing the Kickstart and cutting up the clutch case. In the pictures you posted Rich the motor is way too low...the pipes have no chance. The next problem is the tank..its one of them that drops down behind the engine with a fuel pump...gotta cut at 2 inches out the bottom...might just make it flush with the frame.
Next problem is width of seat frame ..only 8"..my 2 pipes are wider than that so need make/adjust seat frame.

WANT IT TOO LOOK LIKE THIS.....WITH PIPES LIKE THE ONE BELOW.

personally i dont like it, the zxr400 is a little classic, and its a waste to mess with it. its too big and bulky for the 500lc motor, too. stick it in a mito or a 3ma chassis instead.
