Hey guys, first off I'd just like to say that this is a great, very informative forum! My first post, but it won't be the last!Smile

I just got an offer to buy a 1985 350 YPVS, and I think the price is not that bad (approx £700), the seller says he drove it until he parked it two, maybe 3 years ago and that it is in decent, drivable shape. It does need the front brake master cylinder, paint, reassembling of the front fairing and charging the battery..All the bits seem to be there, and it has Jollymoto pipes..

My question is what to look out for and what to do when buying a ypvs that hasn't been run in a copule of years? Is the master cylinder a part that is hard to find?

Mind you, I'm located in Norway, and the RD's pop up from time to time, but not that often..

Any views on this?

Thanks!

Always tricky when you can't hear the engine running, could have dried crank seals, which is a full strip to replace. Plus gummed up petrol in the carbs.

Master cylinders aren't a problem.

Your risk with the engine, I'd say it was pricey if you can't hear it running but that's based on uk prices....

Hi there! Im from Bergen, and have a couple of these bikes in my shed! Smile

700£ or maybe 8000nkr isnt that bad, I paid that for an utterly shagged example wich needed full rebuild of the engine and also everything else except the chassis wich came with rebuilt forks and new bushes, bearings and rear shock...

You cant really tell until you fire it up if the seals are gone, they more most likely in good condition.. Is the airbox removed and foam filters fitted? If so, check the jettings (hovedyse) it should be 240...

clean the carbs, reconnect a good battery, fresh fuel, when you turn the key to on the power valves should cycle, check oil & coolant.
If the bike starts your doing ok if it goes well the 700 pounds will soon be forgotten.

A three year old battery with no juice on it wont be any good, even after recharging... most likely its shagged.. bike will run with flat battery, no problems there, but the powervalves wont operate properly if the voltage is too low.. also tachometer/water temp will indicate too low...

If the crank seals are gone, you could get your £700 back easily enough, the pipes would be worth nearly half that if in good condition.

What's it like working on the 350 engine? I mean, is it a complicated engine doing work on yourself?

As for parts, should I be looking for parts for a 31k?

As for the filter, it looks to me like it's the original filter box at least..

Fairly easy, a few golden rules, like using Yamaha head gaskets, staying away from cheap pistons, and most engine parts are interchangeable. Different stators on various models with matching CDIs and early CDIs had reliability problems. You'll find all the info you might need on here using the search button.

No, they're Allspeeds and LC ones at that (rear mount is out). Easy fix though, you just need to redrill the rear mounts on the pipes.
