best avoided unless used in small doses just for the smell
it doesn't really get along well with unleaded fuel

What oil would you recommend for a two stroke?

All castor based oils will leave a sticky residue when burnt, this eventually gums the rings. It was popular on racing bikes as the engine would be pulled apart very often and castor oil has very good seize qualities, but on a road bike you should avoid it.. It does smell nice but requires far too much maintenance, use a good quality synthetic 2 stroke oil and you should have thousands of trouble free miles.

Is Castrol R40 still available then?
As it seems it gums the rings, would it pose a problem
for a standard 350LC that does 500 summer miles a year?
Would the ring grooves need cleaning in the winter months
every time?
Many thanks, Nick.

Strawberry ? Whatever will they think of next?
Seriously though, I've used Silkolene 'Castorene R30' for road and race, pre-mix and injection and never a problem, the orgasmic pong of 'R' and top class lube to boot.
