Hi,

Bought a 87 RD350 f2 and has major problems with jetting!

I´ve changed pistons and bored cylinders due to previous owner overheating the bike, when assembling the bike i checked the jetting, it´s powerjet carbs with separate k/n type filters, i found that mj was 170? the needle was at the top groove instead of second from top, original pilot jet!

No problem starting the bike up with this lean setting, but in my opinion the mixture has to be really lean this way and i should risk a new seizure by keeping this jetting???

I´ve tried and changed to 210 mj, and lowered the needle to second from top but the bike doesn´t even start with those jets and the plugs get wet, what am i missing? Do i have to change the pilot jet when running separate filters?

any advice is appreciated!

First of all, that is way too lean. I would also bin those filters and get the stock airbox back in, cause those K/N's are pure shite. If you want separate filters, go for ram-airs or the best option UNI.

I would guess you will need a main jet in the area of 220-250, stock pilot jets should be just fine. Stock jet should be 185, not 170 Shocked

Either way, main jet doesnt affect startup at all, just pilotjet and maybe slightly the needle position.

Check these things:

Are the slides in the right carb? (They can be swapped over, and make all sorts of troubles. Check that the cutaway is facing the filters.
Are the choke circuits working? Sounds like maybe your choke circuit is engaged at all times...? If this is the case, that could be why the former owner has gone down to 170 mainjets to make it work, and also why it has seized... Choke on these carbs isnt "choking" of air, but adding of extra fuel through a seperate jet..
Float bowls in the right carbs? One of them has a hole for the choke circuit.

Oh, and good luck! Smile

Stupid me, put the fuel vaccum hose on the wrong tip at carb! Embarassed Tried to start it up and it fired right up!

Only problem now is that it all of a sudden revs up to about 5k and then dies? could it be an intake leak, or anything else?? Have checked throttle cables, slides and choke circuit works normal.

Intake seems ok on the outside, what is worrying me is if it´s leaking down at the crank, hate to crack her open again! Mad
