I've got a pair of Harry Barlow tuned RD400 barrels from '91, used them 3 times and each time they got SERIOUSLY hot and tightened up after no time at all, but never seized. with a change of barrels and exactly the same carbs/pipes etc etc no problems so I'm convinced the powder coating acts as an insulating medium resulting in lack of cooling efficiency. The coating is very thick, heaven knows why anyone would have a/c barrels coated in this way. Bead or vapour blasting would seem to be the way to go although I doubt if the abrasive stream would penetrate far enough between the fins to the cylinder exterior wall to do any good. Perhaps Nitromors would shift it if applied liberally?

Any thoughts or experience on this would be very welcome guys. Harry's a 2 stroke wizard, I would like to make these barrels useable again so any input or opinions gratefully received.

TIA.

Mick.

soak them in petrol or some kind of solvent,if it doesn't come off it certainly will make the coating softer and easier to scrape off Confused

Hi, I had a chat with Aerocoats about how they remove old plastic coating, they use Nitromors and then blast it. Not sure about the thermal properties of the plastic coating, it will be interesting to see, when you remove the plastic coating and refit them, if the problem disappears.

i have ahd exactly the same problenm with powder coated barrels. bought off ebay. the guy i usenow for powdercoating says it is adefinite no no and he would not coat barrels even if i asked, yes nitromors or any decent paint remover i have a 5 litre drum of paint remover i reckon is better than nitromors and cheaper, i cleaned up the edge of an aircooled engine casing the other day by putting duct tape around the outside and carefully applying the stuff with a small brush it softens it enough to scrape it off

Looks like it depends on the bike with PC cylinders. I didn't have any problems with my XT tho I was warned about it. Seems I was just lucky. Also, I've seen loads of Hardly Rideables with coated cylinders Confused I guess chugging along at 0.01 rpm they wouldn't get very hot Smile

You can take them to a chemical stripping place. I get wheels done for about £10 each and come back perfect, but this will rust the steel, so will need a good clean and rebore after stripping this way.......
