Post subject: Head gasket leak or not?

The Yamagamma overheated in the traffic on the May Day run and blew some steam and coolant out of the expansion tank. Once it cooled down it was fine though so I left it. I rode it to work the other day and all seemed well apart from a bit of coolant splashed around the frame near the expansion tank but I put this down to residue that hadn't dried. Anyway, I had the tank off last night so thought I'd check the level. Bike was stone cold but the expansion tank was full right to the top and the rad was nearly empty My question is, does this sound like a headgasket leak? the head is a pain to get off because there isn't much room. Or, was there no coolant in the rad simply because it overheated so couldn't return once it cooled? This engine was fine when it was last used before I built the yamagamma.

I had a problem with my 350 that sounds similar. The coolant leaked out of the expansion tank when the engine got hot but after it had cooled down, when I looked in the expansion tank it was full to the brim. It turned out to be a crimped hose. The hot coolant was forcing its way past the crimp in the hose and into the expansion tank but the cold coolant couldn't make its way back into the radiator. Since the hose was replaced I haven't had a problem with it.

I was gonna ride the bike to the Kent meet tonight but am now not so sure as it's a 90 mile round trip. I rode it in to work this afternoon so I'll give it some stick on the way home and see what it does. If it blows out again, then it'll almost certainly be a head gasket leak.

Same problem here...
I changed the rad cap and the hose between the expansion tank but this didn't cure the problem
The bike runs very fine even when trashed.
however, since I'm sure it's a blown headgasket now (what elese could it be?)
I run the bike gently on short distances. I received the OEM gasket last week
but the weather is too nice and I don't have the time to fix it.
Should be done by the weekend...

Thanks for the replies. I'm not going to ride tonight, don't fully trust it. Plus it's clouding up here and is supposed to rain later

rich..
ditch the stat pressure can build up and force water up and out into the expantion tank and the through the venthole in cap top.
did you blank off bypass pipe or tap into rad say in a wrong position?? i would blank off the bypass and rid the stat and see how things fair then..if all ok your problem is solved. ssen a rad that the bypass pipe was tapped into top near the cap and not below the cap with water pissing out like a hose so position of the bypass is important...i tapped bypass on to the top hose using a t piece in the thermostat top hose and works perfect.it could also be a faulty stat.
try above and remove and let us know how you go
regards gaz

Doesn't sound like a gasket failure
Pull the therm and do the hot water test, it's probably not fully opening.
Ditching the therm works ok, just takes the bike a bit longer to warm up.

I've got a spare thermostat if you want to check it, or just stick yours in a pan of water with a thermometer and see when it opens.

Thanks guys, don't think it's the stat though. it's been checked in a saucepan of water and opens fine. I would normally leave it out but I didn't know how cool it was going to run with the KR1 rad.
