Robert Dunlop dies at NW200

'kin 'ell just heard this news:-

ROBERT Dunlop has died from severe chest injuries following a crash in Thursday's practice session at the North West 200.

The crash happened in the 250cc qualifying at the Mathers Cross Section of the course and involved another rider, Northern Irishman Darren Burns, who has suffered a broken leg and concussion.

It's thought the riders were approaching 160mph as the accident took place. Witnesses say that the rear wheel on Dunlop's bike appeared to stop, throwing him from the bike. Dunlop was rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead shortly after 2200 BST.

Robert Dunlop's brother, Joey, died in a racing accident in Estonia in 2000.

Spectators injured in fatal race incident at Tandragee 100

IRISH MOTORCYCLE racer Martin Finnegan died in a crash while taking part in a road race. Three spectators were injured, one a woman who suffered head injures, when Martin Finnegan crashed at the Tandragee 100 meeting in Co Armagh.

He was on the second lap of a 600cc race when he crashed off the circuit at the Marlacoo corner, close to the Marlacoo Lake.

The 29-year-old married father of one from Lusk, Co Dublin, had scored a spectacular victory earlier at the popular annual meeting. A former Manx Grand Prix winner he had been racing since 1997. Race organisers abandoned the rest of the meeting as a mark of respect.

Finnegan's fellow-competitor Ryan Farquhar said after the accident that oil had been coming out of the Dubliner's bike.

"His back tyre was covered in oil," added Farquhar.

There is a real sense of shock over here, to have lost two of our highest profile racers, rumours are beginning to circulate that the Irish road racing days are numbered, that would be a terrible tragedy, it was watching local heros racing two strokes as a teenager over 25 years ago that started my love of two stroke machinary in the first place, and the many years of pleasure and countless friends made in the years since, but there is no doubt that this is a very high risk sport.

Wow, I can't believe both brothers are dead.. They both loved racing and I though Joey would live forever, I was really shocked in 2000 when he died, but now Robert as well.. At least they both died doing something they loved, but what a huge loss.

You can't be the fastest unless you crash...

They lived for that rush
