I have just bought a rebiult 4L0 engine which the seller told me was stage 2 stan stephens and has a close ratio gear box, how can i tell, are there any ID markings and did he sell close ratio boxes ?
What do i look for and where do i start with carb set up with standard pipes?

I think you have been had.. I have never heard of a close ratio gearbox for an LC (or ypvs), maybe they fitted TZR gears? Someone is bound to chime in if such a gearbox exists, otherwise it must be a one-off custom made thing.

You lucky lucky bugger..! The close ratio gearboxes were marketed by Stan years ago and usually but not always installed with the straight cut primary gears conversion too. Stan marketed them at 120 quid for each set. You will notice a big edge on standard LCs with the gearbox and on a tuned engine you can pull over 80 in 2nd gear..!

If you ever decide to sell the gear cluster let me know.

Beast.

Rich You should be able to see if it has straight cut primaries by taking the oil filler cap out and peering in the hole at the clutch basket gear Wink

Only four of the gear wheels are changed and if they're anything like mine, they'll be light grey in colour and easily distinguishable from the others.

Cheers guys, the seller was a real genuine guy who used to race aircooled bikes,he did say the box was £120 but gave me six standard
spare gears?
How can i tell if SS has tuned this engine, will the tune work with standard pipes, and where do i start with jetting?

The tune will work fine with standard pipes but to get the best from it and your lovely gearbox I would get some expansion chambers.

Give Stan a ring to find out what he thinks will work best. I had a st3 Stan motor and it was full on so best you ask advice.

I can't say for the LC's, but my standard YVPS gearbox is pretty low ratio.

Well i've fitted the tuned top end from the engine to my 100% standard bike, i went for 280 mains, up i notch on the needle and removed the rubber trumpet from airbox, it pulled hard but a little flat mid throttle.
After a plug chop i've now gone down to 240 mains and dropped the needle to 4th notch, it's now pulling from 1500rpm with much more grunt with a little hick-up at 5,500 ( it so small i can live with it ) and pulls to red line in every gear really strong i feel it's going blow.
I have also set the float height to 20mm from the gasket base to top of float with carb upside down, set at the small cutaway in carb body, would this be right ?
The bike feels much better than i ever expected but now i want the 3000-4500 range stronger, my last bike was improved by a boost bottle but it was also fitted with Allspeeds, would a boost bottle help? still looking for some Allspeeds !
Once this is sorted i will try zeeltrontic and leave it at that.
