Hi
Im the mad one who bought it. I was just looking through ebay and saw it and just thought what the hell. I know the rear end and even the whole look will not be some peoples cup of tea. Anyway when i get it home ill let you all know how it rides. I do have a number of worries one of which is the cooling, what do you lot reckon as its a reverse cylinder etc.

Hi all
Well ive been riding the bike around for a bit, god i dont know what im doing. Its been 15 years since i had a bike and that was a small 4 stroke.

Ok, the bike, to me is so fast. At low revs its ok, not to lumpy or anything. At 6-7000 it starts to go crazy and to be honest ive not taken it over 8000 revs, at 8000 revs in 4th i was way to far over the limit. I would like to know what sort of upper revs i should go to without going mad. Also can anyone have a guess at the sort of bhp i might get, the engine has been rebuilt by Bob Farnaham and is one over size if thats makes sence to you guys. I was told this makes it about 428cc now. Im going to take the bike to a dyno and get it set up as best i can so we could take bets on the bhp LOL. I think a normal new RD400 had about 40 bhp so if i hit this ill be happy.

Re how it handles, well i think its fine but what do i know, not alot. All ill say is i always give up before the bike feels antwhere near the edge. Ill get a mate who manages a big bike shop to give it a test ride and report back. The brakes feel amazing.

The pipes are now wrapped with that wadding stuff coz the piped were so hot your bum felt like it was on fire, its not much better now but atleast the rear end dosnt feel like its going to melt away allthough some people would say that would be a good thing.

Re the reverse cyclinders, im concerned about cooling. The bike has the RS250 front plastics so that air scoop pushes air down to the head but what should i look out for or are there tell tale signs when im about to over heat etc. Is it possible to fit a temp guage. I know i sound like a numpty but im learning.

Anyone near to cambridge or peterborough who fancies a ride out let me know.

try go-kart shops for a/c temp gauges

a well tuned 400 should see 55-65 hp depending on the tune
had a 430 farhon tuned one years ago nice and grunty with good top end
nice motor they reckoned 55rwhp but it wasnt a screamer

I think the bike is a beautie! How much did you fork out for it?

I will say something above 50bhp should be there if its well setup.. much of the internal cooling on an aircooled engine comes from the fuel vaporing inside, so you dont have to worry too much... only at standstill on idle or very slow traffic jam speeds should you be a bit worried, but these aircooled engines can take a whole lot of temps before anything goes pop if the carbs are well set (or on the rich side).
