right lads need help my 31k tank weeps between the seam on tap side...
now before you say scrap it let me explain the fault.
inside from the cap top it is minty clean and no rust visable.
the underside has been treated with waxoyl and is solid.
now it weeps slowly between the seam and located the pinpoint area and took paint back and NO rust at all.
now nipped the seam with pliers and hey presto stopped.been told "porous seam" ...dont want to fill the tank with por etc etc so was gonna get it tig'd or brazed etc and use kurust in the tank only.
it need repaint anyhow so has anyone else had this problem.
it is not rusty inside or out and feel it just the seam that has minmal rust and know this area is prone to this fault.
however the metal is solid around the area its the inbetween part that has sprung the leak...this leak was only found when tank is topped up to the max!!!
if tank half full then no leak...
thoughts anyone??

Hello follow sufferer,
It`s amazing what a tiny amount of moisture will do to one of these tanks. As for the "porous seam" no disrespect but I can`t see that at all! after welding the material is very vulnerable to oxidation so after 20 odd years if the seam was at fault it would be a big mess by now. My 250 valve had a superb tank from the outside and minty through the filler, but one day started to weep fuel around the seam at the point were the top frame tube rubber is, I went in with an endoscope and the result was appalling I can tell you!
I am in the process of re building this tank at the moment but fitted another I brought from a breakers, they let me inspect it and It was OK but I sealed it anyway before it was painted.Where is the leak situated?

exact same position...just above the rubber on the frame...and it is leaking in between the seam for def...the weld must have "come apart" gonna have to try and seal it or weld ..the tank btw is totally mint otherwise and buying a 2nd hand one could only be in a worse condition.
il see what i can find out by brazing along the seam edge.need painting so best get it repaired...may seal it as well to be safe...

It will be well worth putting some kind of rust eating fluid in the tank before you start brazing, leave the fluid in over night and put it over a washing up bowl so the chemical leaks through the seam and neutralise's the oxidization between the two weld flanges.
1.
In this case I would also braze because you need the capillary action and even with purging you just will not get that with T.I.G.
2.
Remember the material needs to be Clean,Clean, Clean. If the rust cleaner bottle advises you to flush the tank out with water after use, What ever you do DON`T it will turn orange quicker than a footballers wag Use brake cleaner or petrol.
Keep me posted and may the force be with you.

No POR? Why not? It'll protect the tank for years to come and stop your leak now. Best of all is no tank distortion that usually accompanies welding/brazing.

got to admit you may be correct there but i know the problems people have had sealing the tank and regret it so as this is not a bad leak gonna trreat rust with kurust solution leave braze then repaint.
tank needs it really shame but original but has marks chips and flaky paint so a full resto is now being undertaken but the bike will be used!!!!
so many tank sealers i never done it before so dont want to
1. mess it up
2. regret it later once its painted and it fails.
gonna treat the rust inside and then weld it up.
a mate that has done his has looked at mine and says ..wot leak??? then in went the petrol....it def between the seam he says!!!!
easy to do but need painting after..
i can only go on opinions from him what i feel and others on here and all comments will be taken to be honest...
just want it sorted and sooner have mine done correct than buy another one and go through it all again!!!so many tanks available and say mint/not leak but mmmi reserve judgement...
case of better the devil you know eh??
cheers

Gaz, get the paint off if its gunna be re-painted and get it brazed up, if your as good with the filler as your bikes look restored, im sure you'll be able to cope with any heat distortion caused by the brazing process .. in you heart deep down you know any other other option is just a long time 'bodge up' .. and you could save y'sen that heartbreak .. you know the one, bodge it, paint it and the furger still leaks and ruins your paint .. now that hurts huh

Has anyone here got any actual experience of welding/brazing/soldering tanks?? I've got a leak on mine from a hole about 2mm wide and was gonna braze or solder over it, but other sites I've looked at promise death and explosions if you try welding or similar on fuel tanks, even after drying and cleaning. Whats the best way ??

Try JB Weld its a cold weld like araldite only for metal.I've done a couple of bike tanks with it also fixed a car tank when we'd tried everything.Worth a try if you're worried about heat.
