After splitting the engine on my 82 lc, I noticed that the gears (especially the 1st wheel gear and the idler pinion) on the drive axle seemed worn. You could wiggle them slightly from side to side. How can this play be measured to determine if the gears are beyond their prime? Also if anyone knows, which one wears first; the gears or the drive axle they are on? If it is the axle I hear they are discontinued. Any hope?

I went out and wiggled RZ #2's gears (10,000 miles before bomb took out right piston). They all have play as you've described. I don't think you could wear out a well maintained transmission, so your good to go.

Just thought i would clarify, in the haynes workshop manual the gear in question is called "output shaft 1st gear pinion" and on the fiche the other is called the "gear, kick idle" not sure why the names vary from publication to publication. And when i say the kick idle gear is loose, it can wiggle almost enough to contact the clutch backet rivets (but not quite). If i purchased a new gear, would it be as sloppy?

Almost certainly.

As long as there is no dmage to the faces I would leave it be.

I tried a new kick idler pinion but it only partially cured it so the shaft is more than likely worn too. My only concern would be the retaining circlip coming off. Mine went through the gears without any drama but others have more worrying stories to tell...
