So what is this part for and why did the guy ride without it on his bike? I acquired the bike with a big box of misc parts, and there are 2 of these in the box but none on the 1982 RD350. I think it's defined as an engine stay, but the engine is still there even without it . . . .

Sorry for the newbie questions and the dirty pictures but there's a lot more to come.

Rich The engine stabiliser bars were fitted to the LC's from 1981 onward and all the YPVS models to reduce exhaust pipe fractures at the downpipe. Full story here

jmw Alternatively,

if you really don't want to use them, use a strong thackary washer on the studs for the exhaust or, use a spring mounted exhaust system.

Stangely, just stripped one of mine down today, and unlike my later one, it doesnt have any fitted and no mounts for them on the frame.
Got the later pipes, so can i expect trouble?

As you have an ex race bike, maybe it was weight, to speed the engine coming out or just plain old laziness. Some have the theory that if you have spring mounted chambers then the bars aren't needed as they were meant to prevent the stock pipes from cracking. They go as shown in the photos and the bars will have a small L and R stamped in them to mark which is which - plus you will need a pair of brackets which bolt to the frame right below that lower cross bar.

These will do nicely - paint cost enough without asking him to mix up 3oz. of green. Looking at his photo again they are still attached.

HeeHee, green would look nice. Well that explains the springs on this exhaust tract.

. . . thanks again for the input guys, that brings me to a question about this exhaust system. It had Spec II labeled on it so I know that this was the manufacturer. The question is that when I removed the 4 bolts and pulled off the canister (expansion chamber?) it had only little bits of fiberglass left in one pipe and the other was 3/4 in tact. What should be done. Re-pack with what ?

Expansion can be seen as the whole exhaust system.
Specificaly, it is the part where the pipe is opening/closing i.e. where it's ballon shaped. The canister purpose is mainly for noise reduction, not for a "second expansion".

Thanks for the reply KX3. So it sounds like the canisters can be left empty if I like the way it sounds and the cops don't notice Wink .

or you can pack them - look around for the stuff they sell for dirt bikes and lightly wrap it with safety wire. What shop you near?

Probably CR cycle just down the street P51. I should really bring this bike by your place for inspection when it's done since you've put a lot of your knowledge into it's rebuild.
