Looks like i need a rebore Rolling Eyes

im on .25 oversize just now however i have a set of standard barrels that need a rebore also.

now the .25 os pistons look fine surely i can get the standard barrels bored to .25 over and use the pistons i have with new rings.

anyone see any problem with this??

Probably depends on the wear on the piston but could be done i should think

There's no problem using old pistons as long as they are in good nick, but i would put new rings in just in case.
If the rings were worn into a barrel that was honed, i would bin them because if so, they will see another honed surface and might wear out. But if the rings have never seen a new-honed surface i think you'll be allright using them.

Btw, if you find any surface on the pistons where it looks like it have melted and become dark and blank, then sand it up so the oilfilm can stick easier. These spots (if they exist) are killing the pistons because the oil doesn't stick!

in theory yep but depends on the wear on the piston and skirt...if all ok not oval and the base of piston same size as top etc etc new rings then yer should be ok....however at least the pistons would be heat cured and run ins should be easier...imho new bore...new pistons. Cool

I asked the same question, to the guy that does my rebores, he did not think it was a good idea. Embarassed

Most of us want a good job done on a rebuild why compromise it with secondhand pistons?

I think he's wrong. The pistons itself doesn't really wear into the bore, it just wears out resulting in piston slap. But it doesn't effect the surface of the bores alot.
It's the piston rings that are the important part! I think as long as his pistons are fresh and doesn't slap around in the bores, they should be perfectly allright with new rings.

How old are the old 0.25 O/s pistons....I mean if you've only had them in a week and done 100 miles ..yeah ..re-use them....However, if they have been in that long that the cylinder needs re-boring...surely you are joking. Scrap the sodding things.. Shocked if you put new pistons in a loose bore and ran it for a few months rattling away..scrap them again... Shocked

So unless they are practically new ....SCRAP THEM. To keep them you wold have to crack test..accurately measure..clean up.....just not worth it..and to give the machinist a black old used piston to bore too..wow he's going to be impressed and give you a good warranty aint he.. Razz

Hi thanks for all the replies
yeh the pistons were new only 300 miles ago looks like the previous owner gave me new pistons and a honed worn barrel Rolling Eyes
not having an internal micrometer at the time i assumed all to be fine.

can anyone recomend a reborer in scotland? edinburgh perhaps.

cheers

I would bin them and put new in, cause I wouldnt take my chances on a fresh bore.. get it done properly and it lasts VERY much longer than if you throw together some old crap... You save nowt compared to the future expenses...
