Well some of you may be/not interested but posting due to others that may want info to a spluttering 31k that is stock.

Every jet was washed/ blown through with carb cleaner the bodies cleaned very well and lot of time paid to the airways and cleaned out again carb cleaner and pipe cleaners etc and then in an ultrasonic bath etc and dried properly.
all the jets were all ok and well and all the standard settings were achieved and on the bike they went.

spluttery as chuff up to 5k then off like a rocket...
tried needles up/down no joy.

decided to fit new and was amazed they come with clips etc in a kit and also 2 new rubber cable top seals were bought.

now its 100% cured!!!! i guess the needle was naff so i got under a magnifier and sure enough pitted /corroded.

the "seal" was i suppose leaking a small amount of air down into the slide to add further problems.

the cabel adjusters now are very firm to stiff in the carb tops compared to the slop i had previous so can only conclude my findings...
just wanted to share these findings and may well help if you have problems

the needle kits were quite cheap to say you got new clips etc and screws etc too.

the old seals were rock hard but didnt think that these could make such a difference...plug colours now ok and hardly any problems through the band at all .

the carbs are proper 31k's on 240 mains and bike is stock.

pics below of the parts.

Yep, I had the same issues on my aircooled, the tapered needle was worn so bad it spluttered like hell on the transition onto the pipe, using tons of fuel and killing plugs.. the wear was very visible to the eye, new needles sorted it out for sure.

Gaz, thanks for the info, i can understand the needles, but never would have even looked at the seals (i aso thought they were dust covers)

did you do both parts at the same time, (needles first, then seals)

Gerry

wotever they are the cable guides are now stiff to turn and not "baggy" i ordered due to mine being like 2 rock hard lumps so did both together due to cable had to be fitted through the seal/cover...i can only say that fitting both items cured the problem so have to say likelyhood of the needles sorting the fault ,would be 80% and clean seal on the top say the rest...who knows...just posted to give info and p.no for you all hope it helps someone Very Happy
