On one of my barrels, the stud has been helicoiled.
It looks o.k. but it looks like the hole was filled with weld then drilled and helicoiled.
The trouble is the hole/helicoil is not as deep as the other stud holes.
So the stud won't go as far into the stud holes as the standard ones.
Question is would you pull the helicoil out and drill a bit deeper then insert another helicoil ?
I'm worried the stud will work it's way out
It's about 5mm difference compared to the depth of the good stud holes.

May as well while you are in the area. But why has someone helicoiled a fresh weld? Surely just tapping a thread in would have been sufficient..

I'm only guessing about the welded hole but why would this hole be shallower than the none repaired stud holes.
Also can you get the helicoil inserts in longer lengths ?

if the thread is screwing in by 8mm or more it will have enough depth of thread on new tapped holes ,don't know if this applies to helicoils tho'.

As long as its deeper in than the width of the nut fitted its ok, you can always hacksaw off a bit of it to make it stick out the same length as the other ones. Secure it with some loctite or similar

I haven't got it with me at the moment but it's definitely in more than the width of the nut
I was thinking of chopping a bit off one of the studs to fit it the same length but like i said i was worried it would rip out

Helicoils are usually `1.5 D`
this means 1 1/2 times diameter.
On a 8mm thread, you will get 12mm deep thread.
You can get 2D, but as the steel helicoil is far superior to the cast alloy thread, even 1D would be enough.
Use loctite ( pref a green one like 290 ) and it wont move.

Perhaps the teeny bit of Helicoil Spring/thread is in itself strong.
But it is ...still.. screwed into an insufficient depth of Aluminum thread
Not much actual advantage in having only one side of a threaded coil being capable.
Green Locktite is wayyy too strong
Might just as well Epoxy the damned thing in.
Take yer damaged part to a decent shop and get it properly repaired. Suggest having a Threadsert fitted if you don't want the hole rewelded , drilled and rethreaded.

lol
I try not to get wound up and make myself look a prick, but yet it still happens .
I just dont like the way everything on here gets jumped on, people who have genuine experience are left afraid to pass on knowledge.
It is not the first time I have been contradicted by my Canadian friend either!

stronger than helicoil, but the kits are quite expensive. A local garage engineering place might do em tho
;o)
