Hi all

could anyone help me with a problem with my recently puurchased RD 500! i have stripped the heads and barrels off to check, clean and replace the gaskets as i had a water leak from somewhere, but now i have put everything back together with new gaskets the engine will not turn over? As soon as a piston from either top or bottom reaches TDC it stops which suggests to me either gaskets not thick enough or head has been skimmed to much? any advice welcome.

cheers

Chris

Are the pistons oversize?

Did you check that the piston can fit through the holes in the head gasket?

Laughing ..what your describing is imposible... Laughing

If it turned over before you took it apart and all you've done is replace gaskets..either a super strong giant cockroach has crawled in..your timing chain is shagged...one of the valves has dropped, or half your toolbox is in the crankcase... Laughing

Piston in the wrong way around (arrow should face the exhaust) making the piston ring catch in the exhaust port?

Hi there,

no mate not changed anything else, all i can think is that there might of been 2 base gaskets or a thicker cylinder head gasket? When i got the bike the engine was looking like it had been put together with a catapult with loads of gasket goo around the head and base gasket. Does any one know how thick the head should be? All i can think of to correct it is use 2 base gaskets to lift the barrels up a touch and try again to torque the heads down again

cheers

Chris

Have you found out wether its front or back....?? or both....measure the barrel length from face to face ....has that been skimmed...??

Std barrel length = 90mm (face to face)

Std head thickness = 30mm (from head face to stud/nut face)

Have the heads just been skimmed without the squish being cut back in...if so the rear will look really weird.

If this is the case, and the job looks dodgy, please check the squish with a bit of solder to see if its not too tight.. might cause detonations and havoc if its too tight..
