ok,bike is a pig to start, have to hold the throttle wide open and kick for 10 mins, choke wont do anything.once it clears its throat it idles fine, but wont pull away from the lights for shit, have to slip the clutch like hell to get it moving.top end power is fine revs out no probs.could this be pilot jets?the bike gets unridden for few weeks at a time.wondering have the jets varnished?like i said, idles fine, good top end but wont start or pull away clean.

Had a similar problem with my 4L0 (standard tune, fitted with Gibson pipes), started & idled OK but would not pull away clean without loads of clutch slip.
I upped the pilot jets one size & problem solved.

bit more info, the engine was fully rebuilt and has 500 miles on it,it has been faultless up till a few eeks ago when the choke stopped working, cleaned the choke out completely to no avail, then only last week the sluggish pulling away started,if i can remember rightly i hadnt ridden the bike in 3 weeks up till last week.

Perhaps some rust flakes or other sedimentary bits from the Tank found their way into the carb orifices..? Stock pilot jets seems to suit a pretty wide range of tunes.. besides if it was runni9ng happily before it's layaway.

Not trying to sound patronising but I hope you know that the choke stops working when you open the throttle? Fuel is only pulled through the choke circuit while the throttle valve is closed. However, it does sound like bigger pilots will sort the problem Smile

might sound daft....float bowls reversed? or slides swapped over???

floats seem to be very easy common fault encountered by nearly every honest genuine forum memeber i am sure...the float for the choke has a tiny hole and pipe for the l/h carb for the choke mechanism to work.

Check the clip hasnt come away from the needle in the carb slide..I know someone this happened to..

Also ensure the emulsion tube drillings are not clogged..it will present the same symptom..
