fu%k Mad Sad Mad

iv'e had my ypvs about three months now, in that time she's had new brakes, shock, fork seals / oil / dustcovers, tyres, and just about everything that can come off and be greased has been but every time iv'e fixed something iv'e noticed something else.
it's cost me a small fortune and yesterday, just as i was finishing her off for mot the key snapped off in the ignition! so now she wants new ignition, petrol cap and seat lock probably another 50 odd quid.

couple of questions-
why was nostalgia much better when it was in my head?
how do i get some enthusiasm back? some of you must have felt like this
how much is it worth broken and sold on ebay?
i'm seriously considering it!

Mmm, Fully Synthetic!

Why don't you just strip the ignition switch down?

You can take the barrel out and remove the broken off key if you have a spare key anyway! failing that as weaver said Simon will sort it out Wink

Any good old style lock smith should be able to sort the ignition for you. I know of a few, although here in Ireland, that can make new keys for ignitions, whether or not you have the broken key. I'm sure their skills are the same as any others elsewhere.
I got one made up only a few weeks ago and all it cost was €7.

the problem with these bikes is sorting out all its past life bodges, once done, if you do it properly, they are very reliable. Dont give up.
If its only a broken key, you should be able to get it out and get a new one cut if you dont have a spare. Embarassed
Simon can do a new lock matched to your others for £40, you will never have a problem with it again, or you can just replace with a pattern one for about £20-25, but the slight extra is worth it, do it right only once. Laughing
I replaced mine the weekend I got it 2 years ago, and never had another problem.
or
Sell it, buy a new modern bike, loose a fortune. Shocked

If you have to think about selling it, do it and give it to someone who wants it.

Laughing see, even the tank is more sought after than a CBR600.

It's 20 years old man, what where you expecting, if you bought one new in todays money it would probably be around £3200-£3500, you can't expect it to be as good as that but it would be classed as a cheap bike which it was in its day.

I've arsed around with classic cars and bikes for years and if it's what you want it's worth spending money on, it just isn't guaranteed that you'll get your money back.

You don't however lose anything like the money you would on a new bike (there are exceptions), like i've just seen z1000's 2006 model, probably imports for £4999 at taz, you'd struggle to better that.

Everything is better in our heads. Nostalgia is no exception.

It's hard to regain enthusiasm when you keep running into problems with something.

If you sell it you might regret it but at least you will have owned one and won't keep thinking, "I wonder what it would have been like".

Your choice dude Confused

Don't give up on it now you've done all the hard work by the sounds of it, better the key broke when you were at home than miles away as well Wink Key is a relatively easy fix as already covered there are a few options. Persist my friend, you would regret giving up on it and breaking it, besides you'd probably not recover all your outlay and be left with various odds and sods that you wouldn't be able to give away.
Besides most of the bits you've replaced are consumables by the sounds of it.
