. . . when I can't read them. Here's a picture of the drive gear. So what is the lash number here? Guesses are good.

I'm curious what a Lash Number is, I'm guessing it's the slop between the drive teeth and the driven teeth? dunno . ron

Is that number the one that was on there or did you write it in? Looks quite bright and distinct compared to what I've seen. There should be a coresponding number on the edge of your the clutch baskets gear - likely on the back side and probably not easy to see but it will be there somewhere. I see you have a chart - you still need a copy of the manual? (pm your address if you do) but beware as the total figure shown is WRONG, the true figure is 155 +/- 1 or between 154 and 156. Don't ask what the numbers are, (and ignore the letters) no one I've run across seems to know what the numbers are, just get them within range. Yes, they do represent the play between the two gears though.

It looks like your drive gear is marked 98 so your new clutch basket will need to fall between 56 and 58 to be within range. Wish you luck when ordering though, kind of a crap shoot since most dealers will tell you the warehouse will NOT look though their stock and select and appropriate part. I don't really believe that though, IMO most are just too lazy to pick up the phone and ASK said warehouse to do just that.

Thanks again P51, yes the markings were already on there and as you had said the markings on the driven gear were really hard to read but I found them finally. Hmmm, I've sourced a 31K-16150-10 basket new for $130 which works out to be less than half of the cost of the local Yammy dealer so I'm happy. I was going to do the crapshoot technic, but it's worth a shot to give the sellers this lash number (57) when they send a freight quote. I also have a manual so I'm fine for now unless you have one that has more accurate information (for example accurate lash numbers).

Again, thanks a ton P51.

if the location of the markings are always the same i'd say it's 86 rather then 98! (got one in front of me and surely it's 81, not 18 Wink)

and p51, ur saying the 'total' lash numbers are the same for ypvs and elsie?

Yes, the numbers are the same for both - they use the same gears on both sides. Can't be 86 or you'll never come up with the right combination to hit 155. Remeber they are hand written with an engraver of some sort so it depends on who grabbed it and how they were holding the thing.

Ron, as mentioned earlier, find the lash number on the clutch basket gear and then find a new basket with the same lash number and assuming both your gears where original you shouldn't have a problem. As we are having to guess at the crank gear lash number it would be safer to use the clutch gear lash number as that might be more readable.

Well, I'm not so sure about that, I had to take a second look at the gear under sunlight in order to find these light scatches and they are the only ones that I found on the backside of the driven gear (clutch basket assembly), yup it's now as clear as day to me . . . Wink
