Just about done restoring my 77 RD400D and have found that I have no power. I mean that when I turn the key nothin happens unless I run a wire from the negative terminal on the battery to...say...the handlebar.
Where is the commom earth? I think its on the right coil mount but not sure. Dont wanna pull the tank if I can help it. Is it safe to just run the test wire permanantly (to the frame somewhere)?

BTW I recently had the frame powdercoated which is why I recon the coil ground aint workin.

Cheers
Lee

I would remove the powder from under the connection and grease it up to stop rust or use a heavy star washers (again coated in grease) as you tighten them up they should pierce the surface & make a good electrical connection. If you do run a separate earth make sure its thick enough to take the load and a cable with fine copper strands is the way to go.

Mark...

just don t use oil or grease on electrical parts mounts -bolts

use something that improves conduction of current and heat

Isn't there normally an 'earthing' point quite close to the battery negative, wouldn't have thought the main point would be on the coil, thats usually another supplementary point, have you looked around the battery area for perhaps a missing bolt or 'empty' thread, nothing on the loom give you any pointers??
