if my timing is out can it affect 1 cylinder only or will both be affected?

most likely bothpots will be affected .....however.........1 pot different to another tends to be a symptom of a twisted crank...

shit gaz dont say that.......bikes running intermittingly on 1 cylinder, changed the coil, plugs, lead, caps, changed the carb, swapped the leads, cylinder chimes in from midrange up but goes onto 1 at low throttle openings and idling.cant figure it out, carb is clean as a whistle.

you done all that ...mmmmm bad intermittant faults are the worst...
1.
crank seal leaking??
2.
water getting into the cylinder via gasket and fouling up the spark plug...(had this fault myself)
3.
rings /low compression.

you tried all the obvious by the sound of it tbh....but still sounds carby...or fuel not getting there....doubt timing as the plate would affect both cylinders...this has to be a strange one..
check head gasket for water getting in and fouling the plug and this would cut the plug from sparking...had it similar to you on my valve but turned out i hadnt torqued down far enough... Embarassed Embarassed
never answer the phone when your doing sommat...lol.....
just an idea mate.
gaz

cheers gaz, some ideas there to try, think you mite be on the money with the water gettin into the cylinder, have noticed slight leak fromt the head bolts so might need retorqing.as for compression, new pitons rings an bores so rule that out.new crank seals aswell.no obvious smoke either so im gonna rule that out.time to break out the torque wrench methinks......btw your tacho is workin sweet! thumright

If youve recently stripped the top end, dont forget if it got real hot before the head may have twisted, however it wouldnt misshape untill you took the head off so you wouldnt have noticed a problem before.
