Okay guys, I know this is an RZ forum, but you seem a bright tolerant lot, so i will ask. My RG500 engine has been bored out to 570cc and I just purchased a set of swarbrick GP exhausts of ebay with damaged silencers. I am going to fit some TYGA or other make of silencers, but I will need to cut and weld the exhausts to fit my intended chassis (a 2008 R6). Whilst I am cutting the exhausts I thought it might be wise to increase the expansion chamber volume to allow for the larger capacity of the engine. My first question, does that make sense? Does the expansion volume change with engine capacity? If yes, how much would you recomend increasing the volume? I asked the RG500 mailing list, but didn't get a single reply, so thought I would try picking your collective brains. So fire away with the abuse, and hopefully a few meaningfull replies.
Cheers.

You really should get your engine specs put into a pipe program to see what the pipe specs should be.

Chances are, even the ones you bought will be well out. Not just in belly size, but also in timing.

i agree theres no good rg board so i ask here or usa2strokers . i dont know the answer to your query though. good luck with the overbore. i know Rick Lance took one to 750cc once but im not sure how that worked out. he has a website:" lance gamma" though and i find him more than willing to discuss his vast experience with rg500s

I am on the list but didn't see your question.
I wouldn't bother adjusting the volumes, alot of work for how much improvement? You would be better off starting from scratch really as what you are doing just seems like a complete guess.

Thanks guys, I looked at the work to make 4 exhausts from scratch and thought it would be a lot easier to get a second hand set of pipes and modify them.. I have never tried an exhaust program and would not know where to start. I got some dimensions from Randy, and was going to try and get close to them. I don't have the swarbricks in my sweaty hands yet, so i don't know if getting close to Randy's dimensions is possible or not.
I have not received any email from the RG mailing list in over 2 weeks, is it still working? I will have to contact Eric and get back on it if I have somehow been removed.
Thanks for all the suggestions, I guess I will wait till the exhausts arrive and then decide what to do. I have no problem leaving them as they are (except for a few nip & tucs to make them fit my planned R6 chassis).

Actually you would be suprised at the benefit of having the right belly diameter.

Try this software for your pipe design. It will tell you the belly size and the dimensions. You can compare this to the pipes you are thinking of getting to see if you are in the ballpark.

would'nt have thought 17cc per cyl would make much differance
especially using off the shelf pipes for a start they may not be matched to your motor set up any ways
volumes will change with motor specs but everything effects this bore/stroke/porting would imagine being a disc valve motor as opposed
to reed valve/piston ported would change pipe shape/volume

me id leave it alone then dyno it when its done and see what the experts
say after that

I cant exactly remember what he said but I assume you have read Randy's pipe theory....its very good. I think he said Swarbs were quite good until he wanted over 110bhp......oh yeah... I nicked a reference copy ..ere ya go..

http://www.gareth.evans9.btinternet.co.uk/randys_theory.htm

I'm gonna read it all again myself I think.....got some time to kill.

if you want to know about pipe theory read this book, its tells you everything you need to know. lots of maths unfortunately.

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Two-stroke-Performance-Tuning-Graham-Bell/dp/1859606199/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1215441929&sr=8-1

from what i understand the angles that your exhaust and transfer ports open at have more to do with the design of the pipe than the engine capacity. could be wrong though. like i said lots of maths. i hate maths.
