Not summat I've ever thought about Smile . If you knacker the old one getting it out it don't matter. But if you damage the new 'un trying to get it in your back to square one!. I'd ave said no, but don't let that stop yer trying. Smile

Yes, I have changed the seal without taking the shaft out. Just screw a self tapping screw into the old seal to give you something to pull it out with.

I've changed one in the past without splitting the cases, but it didn't cure the leak as the shaft was worn! Sad

Shouldn't be tight, most seals can be pressed in with your fingers and a bit of grease. You could always use the plastic chain guide thingy to make sure it goes in square Wink Splitting the cases won't make any difference anyway as the seal is in the lower case! You could remove the gearchange shaft but that's a pain as the clutch has to come off. If you're gonna go that far you may as well fit a new shaft as well.

Good idea with the chain guide! thumright I changed mine when the engine was apart, it's just I know from experience at work how easy lip seals are to damage Embarassed .

I've pressed in new selas with the help of a long neck beer bottle… no hammers please! Try to get it square or it will leak again, and more important try to get it not exactly in the spot as before, often the seals are Ok, but the shaft is what wears.

also, the bush in the crankcase side cover may be worn and this lets the shaft flex more and wears out the seal. (I think...) Rolling Eyes
