i use dampers on all of my sport bikes,
(my rd/tz is a race bike) and my ducatis.
they can be wonderful things, just don't set them too tight because
the load can be transfered, in a bad way, to the frame.

does it generally stop any speed wobble/vibration when giving it licks, or is it more for the cornering
cheers

The key to an easier, better and longer life is to mount a motocross handlebar and keep the front wheel straight when doing the throttle twisting movement that you can't prevent on a 2-stroke.
Other then that i dunno, why do i even write? I think i remember someone saying that steering dampers was good. The rd's certainly need something to keep it from wobbling!
I havn't tried a steering damper myself but i can imagine they make the frontwheel too stiff when/if it starts to wobble.
One thing i noticed when i got a real kickass wobble (Oh yeah it was a lot of fun!) was that it helps to let the bike clear itself out without interrupting. (forcing the frontwheel to stop wobbleing with your arms)
The bike is better to act a bike then the rider.
So anyone that knows, correct me if i'm wrong, but wouldn't a steering damper interrupt the bike from clearing itself out?

Std frame and suspension construction is ok without steering damper. But with longer rear shock it start to wobble. When i put R6 rear shock on, bike start to make some horrible moves when making wheelies. Then i put MY05 Yamaha R1 original steering damper on, and all troubles gone...
Now i have little bit shorter front shocks, and first time i test them without damper. Bike was horrible to ride in slow speeds. But again, i put damper on, and that make it much better.

i have done a lot of moto cross mostly on a yz 250, i can generally say that the feeling i get when opening up my lc 350, is a lot like the yz 250 as its going through the ruts, is it coz the front wheel when in the band is lightly touching the tarmac

Sounds like a good thing then. So the steering dampers just stop the wobbeling from appearing rather then clearing it out?
I just remembered when you said it also, i have raised the rear and lowered the front, and it's horrible when accelerating and when going a bit faster. I can live with it until i die from a crash though.
Allright i'm just joking, i don't go fast nowadays because i have a front brake that doesn't work fo shiet.
One's gotta be careful nowadays and especially when sitting on a crotch rocket, because you never know if/when a finnish man with a knife jumps up on the road from nowhere!
