My 500 (1GE) keeps fouling the rear plugs (170 main jets), the front cylinders are running fine (165's). I am thinking of changing the rear jets to 180's. Would this help and/or is there something else I should be looking for.
Cheers

Hi Johnny

wot plugs u running, are they new/recent,shouldnt need to re-jet,dont think that will help.

if you do alot of town work you could run 8,s as Gareth recommended this makes them run cleaner,is oil pump set correctly?

Matt

I had the same problem with my 500. I changed my airfilter and removed my oilpump and switched to 2,5% premix. Since then no problemo.

I assume std carbs....std airbox and filter...filter not too heavily oiled.

Make sure oil pump is not on too much....I have been over the top on the adjuster and it can foul plugs easy. That oil cable that goes to the servo wants to be only just moving when the throttle is twitched..not holding the oil pump allready open even before you open the throttle. (Powervalves have to be closed for this test - turn ign off halfway through clean cycle or have engine ticking over) you can just back off oil cable adjuster until it stops moving when you slightly touch throttle. They have to move simultaneously from both being off if you understand what I mean.

170's should be OK...160's would best....I would not go 180's with std setup..your making it even richer....160's would be the best way to go. There are strange that things screw it all up though...crushed elephant ears have a huge effect (people forget the distance tubes and then keep winding screws up).....dripping wet oily air filter does too.

When messing with this lot the most importatn thing to remember is when you go out and test it...if the bike doesn't feel like it wants to go...take it straight home and dont force it...you will seize it or burn hole...something is wrong.

Hello,

Just my 5 pence Laughing

I would swap coils around and see if it continues to happen, I would check the earths/coil connections and make sure they are good.

It might be that you have a weak spark on the rear Wink

If I`m happy with the electrickery then I would look for something else Exclamation

Had the same problem with mine, fouling the rear plugs, and it was float levels/float needles worn. I think the carbs that feed the rear cylinders are lower so petrol pressure is higher. Just another possibility to eliminate.

Thanks for all the advice Guys,
The bike has standard carbs, filter and box and is currently using NGK BR9HS, I have run 8's but changed to 9's in an attempt to cure this problem. It tends to happen on start up, I've done a couple of trackdays and it didn't miss a beat.
So I will start at the top and work my way down, should keep me busy for a couple of nights!
Cheers
John
