Can you tell me if the cdi flywheel from the Canadian 79 rd400 model will fit on the American model that was a points ignition? It looks to me like the flywheel that I am looking at is held on with a nut instead of a bolt which in my mind would make it like the later L/C models with the larger taper diameter.

The left hand crank journals are different and do have slightly different tapers on them, I have heard of people making up a sleeve and using a longer bolt but I have not seen it done. Alternatively you can fit the CDI type crank as a complete unit.
The mounting points for the stator in the crankcases are slightly different. The castings are right though so you just have to drill a 5mm hole and tap it at M6 to allow the CDI stator to bolt up.
Probably easier to keep the existing rotor and stator and fit an aftermarket CDI system.
