Hello,

So i've had my 86 RZ350 for a while now but have been dealing with some issues since i've bought it. I have a few questions which hopefully someone can be kind enough to answer.

Specs: -Powerjet carbs with 27.5 pilot, 400 main and position 2 needle clip
-Spec II chambers
-Looks to have mild port work
-Boost bottle
-Premix
-Stock air box with snorkels off
-A bit less than 100 psi compression each cylinder

My first issue is that from a dead stop, taking off the bike boggs bad. I have to keep the rpm's above 3 grand to stop it from bogging while releasing the clutch slowly, almost like its slipping. I have done everything from messing around with the air screws, adjusting needle clip position and swapping pilot jets a size larger. Nothing changed except make it worse. Do these bikes need higher rpm to take off or what? When cracking the throttle while moving the bike sometimes sputters to if this helps to diagnose the problem. A jetting problem or possibly a clutch problem?

Also, it seems my bike is leaking transmission fluid. I have no idea where it is coming from. I've replaced the shift shaft seal with no luck and cleaned underneath it very well to try and investigate the leak but can't see anything. It occurs right after a drive with a small puddle near the kickstand. It doesn't leak if i start it and let it idle, only after being driven. Any clues to where the oil could be coming out of?

Thank you,

Steve

try another size up on the pilot jet.

the oil could be coming off your chain, what chain lube do you use.
(given that the aeal has been replaced and the shaft ISN'T worn)

Firstly, what model have you got?

Is the powervalve working properly?

What oil/fuel ratio are you using?

The '86 model in the UK is an F2 with 'powerjet' carbs running a 185 main and a 27.5 pilot jet, if it is the non powerjet model, they generally run 240 mains and 22.5 pilot. A 400 main seems a little large!

Someone will probably come along and correct me (Herb!), but pulling away uses the pilot and then the needle jet depending on throttle opening, however, if your mains are to big, you may have oiled your plugs up, giving 'false' symptoms.

Oil leak sounds like gear change shaft and LH side cover bush worn, hence leaking after it has been used.

Check the gearbox breather pipe,
Run the breather pipe into a small vented plastic bottle, go for a thrash and see if the bottle fills up with oil.
Leaky crank seal can help blow oil out of the gear box.

Is the oil level correct?

The main jet sounds big, how well does the bike go between 3/4 & Full throttle?

I believe it could be a crank seal thats leaking but am not sure. I've heard if you have under 100psi compression you should consider a rebuild so that might be a thought. The gear box oil goes down since its leaking. I always fill it to the top just to be safe and check it often.

I have gone up a size on the pilot with no luck. The bike just sputtered really bad meaning too rich.

I run a 40:1 ratio. Plugs look good. I have never had a chance to get it up to full throttle so i have no clue how it runs up there but to me a 400 main seems way to big. And yes, its a 1986 RZ350 YPVS F2.

Oh, i forgot. The powervavle does function when ignition is turned on. I have taken off the cover and looked at it and it seems fine.

If the crank seals have gone I'd have thought gearbox oil would have dripped out at tickover as well as when you go for a ride?

If you have powerjet carbs, they have a pipe running from the float bowl to the top of the venturi (roughly level with the top of the carb slide when the throttle is shut).

If they are powerjet carbs, that main jet is huge! However, it should tickover ok and carburate fine up to about 1/3rd throttle, when the main starts to take over.

would guess the leak would be from a nice groove worn on the shaft itself. Sad

400 main jet is massive, if they are powerjet carbs how big are the powerjets Shocked How about some pics to give us a clearer idea? 'be interestin to see the porting work. Also, at less than 100psi per cylinder it's probably time to take the top end off and have a measure of your rings etc. As above, leak is probably water pump shaft worn away by the seal.

I have no clue what size the powerjet is. Next time i have the carbs off i will take a look.

As mentioned above, does having below 100 psi compression cause bogging? Could i just get away with ordering new piston rings to freshen up the engine or should i just replace the top end since everything has to come off for the rings anyway?
