Nipped up the shop the other day and parked my, (in need of much tidying up) CB-1 next to an immaculate XT500, think it was the second model, as new, black & white with Red decals, lovely gold wheels not a spec of dust on it. As I walked in the shop, the owner came out and I could see the guy wasn't too impressed by my trusty steed, with it's rusty swingarm, scratched exhaust and drive chain that's being waiting to be replaced by a new kit I have had here for months Embarassed . Anyway, went in the shop, stood in the queue a while, and when I came out, the bloke was puffing and panting and still hadn't started the bloomin' thing. Laughing Guess he hadn't got the nack yet Rolling Eyes

They can be a bitch to start if I remember right. I'm a bit weary kicking over big bikes myself after my mates XS650 racer literaly threw me in the air and mashed my ankle up after "kicking back" when I was 16. An even worse one was getting knocked in the chest by the start handle on a vintage saw bench - one of those with no clutch on the handle so you have to quickly get it off once the engine starts to fire. The same handle walloped my mate under the chin and smashed all his front teeth in Crying or Very sad

my dad has had 3 of the C models and aparrently the key is to use the manual decompression right before you kick it over, that stops the kick back aparrently. the last one my dad had broke his mates ankle kicking back after he tried to start it in shorts and green flash trainers.

they are awesome and i will get one at some point to annoy my dad.

this is his old one that he sold about 18 months ago:

he sold it after i fixed it and i was gutted to see it go as its been in the garage for years. most of which it has spent out of action. however, it came back on eby about 6 months ago and i told him to buy it back. he didnt. still pi$$ed about it tbh...

Have had my XT for ages, but like most things it's off the road at the moment. Never really had any problems starting though.

The forks are definately standard and so I presume are the yokes.
I am however thinking of converting to a supermoto look with possibly a YZ125 front end.

I've a mate with a TT500, much the same thing, but no lighting coils, magnesium cases & no damping in the drive train.

Starts nice & easy, better than my DR600, it's a technique thing.
