Anyhow, I know what it's from (rad fluid leaking in) but I'm not sure about the solution. When I replaced my right hand gasket and the one inside there that is for the impeller I was wondering if I should have added a skim of silicon to them . . . . what do you guys do ?

Only three ways it can get in, water pipe which has an O-ring inside, impeller seal and the water pump cover. As mentioned if the shaft has a groove worn in it then it can fail again.

Thanks guys for the replies, there were no previous leaks untill I had taken the right hand cover off to replace the clutch basket so I'm going after that rubber ring that is in question.

I can't see how an O-Ring failure here can leak coolant into the crankcases. A leak would be obvious as coolant would leak onto the cases and then the floor through the centre drain hole, and the case gasket surrounds this area as well Confused

Are you talking about a Valvie thermo ring? I mean the small pipe that passes coolant from through the case from the water pump to head.

the ring goes on a small alloy tube that passes into the r/h cover and it under the r/h carb and goes to the waterpump area of the sidecasing.

something else to check...you did fit the seal for the impeller the correct way and the wording"waterside" on the impeller side then a new bearing.
impellers do get groove cut in and i tend to replace new with the seal.

water will not find its way in from the water pump cover plate gasket..it will just leak on the floor and wet the oil pump.

my bet is the o ring or seal is wwr.

Hmmmm now you got me thinking . . . . . It must be the impeller seals. Confused I'll know in a few days of riding though cause I've allready tossed it together and been out for a test run and the oil looks clean so far but we'll see it a few more days.
