Hi (1st post) quick question does anyone know if I can quickly change the kickstart oil seal without removing the cover?

probably not. I think the seal fits from the inside of the cover, but can't find it in the manual
besides, thats a pretty high seal to have a leak out of. are you sure the oil level is correct? no coolant in the oil?
and the fact that thre is not a lot of wear and tear on the mrechanism there seems a bit suspicious

Yeah it's possible. Just bend the bastard out using something pointy, watch the case etc and don't slip the pointy tool into your hands or anything. I know from experience that it can be pretty bloody.
And then when you have the sealing out, clean crap out of the way and put grease on the new oil seal (they can be hard to put in if they're dry) and where the seal are going. And then gently press it in.

yes you can
they can pop out with a thin screw driver tapped into the seal and lever out or put in a self tapped screw in and pull it out...you do of course take care in either way but kickstart seal rarely leak or fail.
dont forget to apply grease on the new seal and tap into the case with a deep socket over the shaft............ kicker removed of course

Stephen, here's a clip from the parts manual to hopefully help you see what you're after (part # 7). Hmmmm, is that a 1981 RD ? I thought the 81s were white and blue ?

Well as far as I know it's a 1982 model the frame number is 4L0200427. What do you think?

I think it's a 4l0 then.
Did you pry/force/sledgehammer the sealing out? I'd imagine it's a bit tricky and i havn't done a kickshaft seal myself, but i know that it's not a thick one so it should come off pretty easy.

Billy, I have not even ordered the parts yet as I am thinking of changing the clutch at the same time now. So I am thinking about which springs to fit??? plus gasket and of course the seal...

You're having problems with a slipping clutch? It could be wrong oil. Car oil which many (including me ) just dump in there contains this "friction stopping stuff" and will make it slip.
This bike has originally about 45hp and that would be about the same power as a slightly tuned 125cc motocross. But they often have alot smaller clutches, so the stock bits on a 4l0 shall be able to take the power without slipping, i think.
So if you had car oil in it, then replace it. You might wanna heat the plates up a little bit (In the oven maybe?) so the old oil is sweating out. Or wash every plate in hot water. But it's probably not that important. I've heard of people having this problem and by only changing the oil for the correct one the problem went completely away.

When you fit the new oil seal, don't forget to put some tape over the kickstart splines to protect the lip on the seal!
