Hi there
I took a trip out to Japan in May this year to set up a trading account with an auction agent and thought you might like to know what the two stroke situation out there is like.
After reading several magazine articles about the streets of Japan being awash with two stroke racing reps I drew up a list of twenty bikes I thought may be interesting and headed out to land of the rising sun in the naive hope that I could secure all twenty bikes and have them in a container ready for shipping by the time I was to come back( 7days later). Oh how wrong I was!
The main auctions take place in Tokyo and I participated in a couple whilst there. The only way to see the bikes is by logging onto the auction website using my auction agents' code and looking up the frame numbers of the bikes I wanted. Each bike is given two photo images supplied by the auction house. After the images had been viewed it was time to look up the historical sale price for that particular model, jump on the phone to the auction house and speak to one of the bike handlers to find out the genuine condition of the bike in question. Once satisfied, your highest bid is then tendered and you wait to find out if you are the lucky winner of the sale. It is one hell of along winded process!!
The main reason I did not find my twenty bikes as hoped was not because I am tight, although my wife may argue. It was simply that the amount of interest in two strokes from countries such as Russia and New Zealand is staggering, they literally want every TZR & NSR they can lay there hands on. I guess what I am saying is that contrary to popular belief there really isn't an endless supply of quality two strokes just kicking around Japan.........so look after what you've got!
I will keep you guys posted over the coming weeks and hopefully set up a link to my site when it's finished.
cheers for now

From what I have seen the days of sport bikes in general in Japan are (at least for now) long gone, petered out sometime in the late 90's. Most now are cruisers (they had a bad translation for a while, Yamaha Dragstar was the Drugstar ) enduros, motardish hybrid stuff and scooters.

Drewski, Thanks for the question. I hope to bring in some decent old favourites:- SDR, TZR 3xv/RS/SP. I am also bringing in some R1z's and some RZ50-2's. I am desperately trying to source some gag bikes as well. I cannot give firm prices until I have agreed the taxable figure with HM Customs. This container will almost be exclusively decent bikes, the second conatiner I hope will have some rolling projects maybe even the odd TZ racer onboard!

Bagsy an MC28, not if I can't get any parts for it tho NSR400 might suffice. Good luck with customs, I'd trawl the North China Sea for band of pirates to bring them in the back door If it's possible to smuggle in thousands of immigrants, how hard can a few strokers be

ARR ME Hearties, them pirates would probably want to bugger me and me dog into the bargain. Question is, will HM Customs leave me with more or less of a ringpiece than a bunch of marauding scurvey seadogs??

The customs isnt difficult as its all in black and white
you can ring
