I would just like to say I have been lurking on this forum for about 4 years now. I had a name before made a few posts and thats it. Anyways now to my questions.
I have a 1984 RZ350 which has spec-II street pipes, TDR reeds, and 30 MM. carbs. It runs like a champ starts with a kick or two. Sometimes needs the choke when the engine is cold. It has almost 17,000 miles. I was wondering if I could re do the top end soon. Meaning getting new pistons and rings then having the cylinders bored to the next size. I don't believe the engine has ever been apart except the powervavles. How should I really determine if it needs this done. I am wanting to skim the head eventually and maybe a light port job. Any tips or advice for me. Sorry for the long post.

ANother thing the bike is still on oil injection using Motul 710 fully synthetic oil. The plugs always look good. Golden brown.

sounds like its in good working order. I got a nice saying that says dont mess with things that works!
You can measure the amount of compression in your barrels, and that can give some indications towards the state of your barrels.
Also you can measure the ring gap or the bore size to see if its worn..

As Jante says, check the compression and if you can do a leak down test. If it's good then leave well alone..

Everything over 100psi is okey/good right? Or did i remember it wrong?
I think i've read everything between 95 to 115psi.

There so many shite gauges out there, so its kinda hard to say, cause some of them are off by as much as 50% (my own experience).
If you have access to a good professional quality gauge, anything above 100PSI is ok, pref 110-130 to be good. Below 100 will lead to lack of performance, especially noticeable in the low rev departement.
A low PSI bike will be hard to start, and you will struggle and have to overrev it to launch, or slip the clutch alot...

I use a Draper compression tester on mine as below. My standard 250LC gave 130psi and my tuned 2mm o/s YPVS engine gave 145psi on the same guage. Both tested cold on wide open throttle. However if it starts well and doesn't lack power then I'm sure it's fine. I wouldn't pull a motor apart just for the sake of it.
